Many adults suffer from the symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction/disorder, referred to as TMD or TMJ. This disorder involves dysfunction within the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the hinge joint that opens and closes the jaw. Common symptoms include tension headaches, soreness in the jaw, popping within the joint, and general tenderness in the muscles around the area. At Converse Dentistry, we offer accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for TMD/TMJ as part of our family dentistry services.
TMD often occurs when the bite alignment is incorrect, or the person grinds or clenches their teeth. The extra pressure on the jaw joint and teeth can cause severe headaches and facial pain, as well as damage to the teeth. With treatment, this pressure on the joint and teeth can be eliminated, allowing the joint to heal. Often a night mouth guard or oral appliance is used to adjust the bite while protecting the teeth from damage from nocturnal clenching or grinding of the jaw.
If you suffer from tension headaches or jaw pain, it may stem from TMD/TMJ. However, it is important to have an accurate diagnosis to determine if this is the root cause of your symptoms. At Converse Dentistry, we use advanced testing and imagery of the jaw to determine if you have TMD. We also examine the teeth for evidence of wear from clenching or grinding. If our dentist determines you do have TMD, there are effective treatment options available to alleviate the pain and protect your teeth from damage.
